In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
