Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
