The Former President's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
